Photo Courses

Starting this September 2010, I am running photo courses at Villa Roquette , our home in Languedoc in the South of France. We have plenty of room and can cater for 14 guests, although I plan to keep the courses small, usually no more than four of five people for each session.

I have been teaching photography and photo techniques for over 30 years, both for amateur and for certified degree courses for US forces in the UK. When we moved to Nizas in the Languedoc in 1991 I registered a photo school and built workshops and darkrooms into out home, but the success of our rental business due to the Internet marketing I started kept me too busy and I only had time to run a couple of short courses.

Now our accommodation in out new home in Montblanc is (nearly) finished I can get back to my original plan – with some changes :)

Digital photography can now, in the vast majority of cases, offer a quality to equal anything possible with traditional darkroom processes. The latest DSLR cameras and many pocket cameras are capable of recording and delivering images efficiently and economically.

The sophisticated computer systems built into modern digital cameras and printers, plus the processing software available for enhancement and interpretation has matured, is available at a low cost and can be used by everyone interested in photography. New ink printers with black and grey as well as colour inks produce stunning prints. Digital images can be shared with your networks of friends instantly.

Photography is a craft which can be improved by learning the techniques and practicing with the help and guidance of a teacher. I can teach this.

Some photographers are artists, a few are good artists, fewer still are great artists. I cannot make you an artist, only you can do that, but I can help you discover the skills you need.

Although most courses are for digital photography and digital processing and printing, I also run courses for black and white  film photography and darkroom printing, even for wet colloidion if you really wish to get down to basics – let me know.

Fees

The charges are a basic 25 euro for each course session. Demonstration materials are included, but for printing inks, papers and chemistry is charged at cost (or bring/buy you own).

The Courses

The Camera and Lens – a choice of 6 sessions

Light and Lighting – a choice of 5 sessions

Processing – a choice of 5 sessions

Presentation – a choice of 4 sessions

By arranging the courses in this way you can choose exactly what you need to learn and only pay for the time which is valuable for you personally. I believe that I have something to offer everyone, you may only want a couple of sessions in a week to learn one specific technique – or be with me for two weeks to get a thorough grounding in  photography.

Of course we all learn from each other so I will keep the numbers small, usually no more than four people on each module, so there is time for one to one assistance, but valuable interaction in the small group of people.

The aim is also to get out into this beautiful part of France, to see new things, perhaps in a new way.
